Originally built in 1877, The Civic in Barnsley has long been a cultural hub of the town, having held a theatre, a library, an art school and much much more. After a partial refurbishment, it was given over to Barnsley Civic Enterprises and reopened in 2009 with a third of the building unfinished and unused.
The scheme comprised of the formation of a range of new facilities, including a performance spaces and events venue, a contemporary design led gallery space, office space, and a flexible lettable ground floor space. Works included restoration of a grade 2 listed facade, providing new lift access, and reinstating the original visitor entrance, including reinstating and extending the original staircase to provide ease of access from the recently renovated town centre and high street.
